I've even tried prying up on by putting the thick side of my pocket knife under the front of the bracket and pulling up. I can feel a tiny amount of give (maybe a millimeter at most) when I push and pull, and thats it. I can see that the mechanism that allows the case side panel to be removed would also keep the brackets in place if it were not open, however it is open, and I can barely get the first bracket to move in the slightest. The other brackets with no hard drives in them can slide out easily. there are 3 more brackets for more hard drives lined up along the length of the case. Not sure which version of mac this is but the hard drive is in a bracket that slides in just under the power supply at the back of the case. it appears pretty straightforward, but I can't get the drive to budge at all. I have a mac tower that I need to remove the hard drive from.
